What is Linux?
Linux is an operating system, like Windows, only it differs from Windows in many ways. It is built on C++ just like Windows, but has a different file structure based on the UNIX operating system. Programs that run on Windows may not run on Linux.
Over 70% of servers online today use Linux. It is hailed worldwide for its stability and security.
What can Linux do for me? (What technologies are compatible with Linux?)
Usually server administrators choose the
Apache server for use on Linux
. The main versions out at the time of this writing are 1.3.31 and 2.0.53, and each differs in file structure.
PHP (Pre Hypertext Processor)
is usually coupled with Apache on Linux to provide a powerful, versatile server-side scripting language that can build
e-commerce sites
, database-driven applications and more.
Apache is fully compatible with Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for secure access to web pages (via the "https://" protocol).
MySQL
is also widely used with Linux and Apache for database administration.
